The core of Debra’s work is an obsession with colour, drawing, texture and collage. “ I love to explore the unexpected, there is always something enlightening just around the corner! My inspirations are global but my cultural roots stem from London where I never tire of what this amazing city has to offer.”
India is the country that captured her heart some years ago, with a particular infatuation for Rajasthan with its faded elegance its gem-like palaces and crumbling walls. The beauty of age and decay, torn papers, peeling paint, old motifs, faded colours, fragile and delicate shades of lime wash paint in the different lights of the day. All equating to multi-layered fragments of history.
Debra recreates this in her work, revealing secrets with rich layers.
“I work with acrylic, inks, dyes, pastels, oils, fabrics, plaster, dyed and sewn fabric, using a collaging process of rubbing, sticking and drawing into it as I go. Pattern, texture, colour and structure emerge organically. Colour is always the focal point, but there is a continual narrative and ever-changing journey always in progress.”
“I am a collector of things,” says Debra “Anything I find that I love, I organise them according to colour and use them to draw, I like to think of my work taking you on a vibrant journey of experiences.”
